How to Recognize and Avoid Phishing Emails (Phishing emails)

Email phishing is a form of online fraud – theft where a malicious user (scammer) attempts to obtain personal information such as passwords, credit card numbers, or other sensitive information by pretending to be a legitimate entity or organization through electronic messages. The phishing process can occur via email, social media messages, or even phone calls.

Email phishing can be detected through the following indicators:

  1. Apparent email address (Sender): First, check the sender’s email address. Malicious users create addresses that appear similar to legitimate ones to deceive the recipient.
  2. Errors or inaccuracies in the text: Spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, or inaccuracies in the message text. Often, these messages are written incorrectly.
  3. Unjustified or threatening prompts: If the communication contains a call to immediate action, such as resolving an urgent issue, or even potential threats to impose a penalty on the user.
  4. Attachments or links: Usually, phishing emails have unwanted attachments or links containing malicious software. Never open such attachments and do not visit these links.

In general, it’s always good to be cautious and verify the authenticity of messages we receive, especially if they request personal information or prompt actions that seem suspicious.

If we suspect any form of phishing, it is advisable to immediately contact the email provider or the organization from which the malicious email originates. It is also good to report the fraud to the Illegal Content Reporting Line on the internet www.safeline.gr via the fraud report page.
